The Continent of Mist
History Long Forgotten
Warning! The following contains information not available to in-game characters and is here as backround information only.
In the history of Galgoria (name of the world all my games are run in), a very powerful being from the Outer Planes came seeking a world abundant in life. It was a creature of no discernible origin or classification, and so the people came to call it Hunger, for it devoured life. Not in the usual sense of eating, but rather it consumed the essence of living things leaving behind a perfect body. Over time, Hunger grew complacent feeling its overwhelming superiority to the mortals scurrying around about it. One day, Hunger, being fatigued from its long gorging, entered a state of hibernation, sending its consciousness back to the planes from whence it came. The people wasted no time. The greatest minds conceived a brilliant plan and began implementing it immediately. They devised a way to contain Hunger and prevent its consciousness from returning to the Material Plane. Unable to do anything with Hunger’s physical form, they decided to leave their homelands and a mass exodus ensued. The people left the continent which Hunger had taken over and went to find other lands. They left behind their plans, eight great machines working in tandem to produce a substance which blocked the path between the Outer Planes and this one. This substance appeared as a vibrant green Mist and so the machines were given the name Mist Generators. The machines were crafted with such expertise that they would continue running for the foreseeable future.
Years passed, and Hunger slept on, unable to return to its physical form. However, something had happened that the people did not foresee. There were those who did not leave. After 45 years, these remaining people gathered together and formed a nation of their own, calling this nation Nowaria. Eventually, this civilization came to hold new beliefs, that they were a chosen people left behind for their obedience and faithfulness. They believed the Mist to be a gift of the Gods given to protect them from Outside and the terrible evils that lurked there. The reason the others were punished was for their unnatural creations and reliance on technology and so they gave up these ways and returned to the simpler ways of magic and the wild. Perhaps a side-effect of the Mist or maybe a result of the return to nature, the people of Nowaria gained large amounts of magical power which spurred many to become adventurers. After centuries, countless ruins are scattered over the lands, remains of the once great empire which gave it all up. These ruins beckon those of adventurous spirit to use the gifts given to them by the Gods to explore and discover. Because most people believe the Mist to be Divine, they leave it alone, but there are always those who are curious. The few who have ventured in though, have never returned, at least not whole.
